Four years in Galmudug: Challenges and Inspirations

My experience living in Galmudug for four years was filled with both challenges and inspirations. Upon completing my degree, I embarked on this journey with no prior travel experience, limited knowledge of Somalia’s topography, and little understanding of the interconnected Somali community and my responsibilities in supporting education. On October 6, 2016, I left Mogadishu and made my way to Dhusamareb, Galmudug’s capital, a district I had never visited before. I had numerous unanswered questions about how life would be different and how the environment would be welcomed.

During my journey, a well-known Dhusamareb resident named Mr. Abdullahi, who sat beside me, asked about my destination. When I mentioned “Plasma Univ” he warmly welcomed me and mentioned that while wealth may not be abundant in this town, the recognition you would receive would help you meet your needs. His words served as a source of motivation for me.

Upon reaching the bustling town of Guriel at 2:00 p.m., I noticed the effects of a severe drought. The airport appeared rough and dry, reflecting the lack of sufficient rainfall in the area over the past five years.

As I stood in line at the immigration service, the officer behind the counter asked me several questions. He wanted to know where I was going and if I knew anyone in town and the purpose of my trip. Fortunately, I had informed the local MP and my business partner in advance, allowing them to fill out a form with my details. This ensured a smooth and hassle-free departure from the airport.

After a 30-minute journey in a land cruiser locally known as” Leyla Calawi,” my business partner and I safely arrived at the Dhusamareb checkpoint from Guriel. This checkpoint required additional security checks and questions before granting entry into the city. From there, I proceeded to my office and residence, where I would be stationed for the next four years.

In my initial few days there, I walked the entire city to figure out what type of a place I live in, as well as acquire an understanding of the map in comparison to other cities in the Galmudug state, such as Guriel, Adado, Galkacyo, and Abudwak Dhusamareb has a noticeably smaller population and a higher number of older government and private houses that have been neglected since the start of the civil war. This is because Dhusamareb was once located on the front lines of the conflict between al-Shabaab and Ahlu-Sunna Waljama’a resulting in a lower population compared to other cities. However, the people of the Dhusamareb are well-informed, and the city is home to numerous local and international organizations.

During my first two years, Galmudug was not functioning in Dhusamareb, and Guriel, the Ahlu Sunna Waljama’a group served as the governing body. I distinctly remember how much everyone appreciated the peaceful environment during that period. Even during times of relative stability, there were still significant challenges due to the extensive administrative responsibilities, inadequate services, and the heavy burden placed on the elite population.

A time has come and we experienced a sense of relief after President Duale reconciled with Ahlu Sunna Waljama’a. In January 2018, Ahlu Sunna Waljama’a led by Sheikh Shaakir, merged with Galmudug, putting an end to years of division that had deeply affected the entire region and caused suffering for the communities in the state, which I witnessed. After the election of Ahmed Abdi Karie (Qoorqoor) as the current president of Galmudug on February 2, 2020, everything started falling into place. many in his contributed to the efforts to have a functioning state government, and I have witnessed all of these changes and recognized the importance of resistance, mobilization, and lobbying.

After all, my four-year project will finally come to an end by late August 2020. Throughout this period, I have had the opportunity to make numerous friendships, explore every town in Galmudug, and establish myself as part of the elite in the state due to my service in the educational sector. Moreover, I have gained valuable insights into the way people live, the local environment, and the treatment of exceptional individuals, particularly in the fields of education and medicine. This experience has allowed me to reflect on the significance of everyone’s confidence, clarity, and positive living to their way of life.

My time in Dhusamareb has been truly enlightening, providing me with knowledge and understanding that I could not have acquired elsewhere. These valuable lessons encompass various aspects such as the art of public speaking, which I acknowledge fully mastered, the skill of persuasive argumentation, the importance of embracing and being receptive to criticism, the value of having unwavering allies in personal growth, and the necessity of adaptability.
